Ans: There are various goals associated with climbing this mountain. There is the goal of reaching the peak and descending safely back down. In addition, there is also the goal of surviving and the prevention of injury.
2. What type of goals are involved in Joe's descent?
Ans: The level of goals involved in Joe's descent were much higher than the goals associated with climbing the mountain. One goal would be the survival of Joe as he descends the mountain. Another goal might be the injury to Joe as he makes his descent. He already has a broken leg and does not need to add another injury to his growing list of injuries. A third goal might be finding Simon, Richard and reaching safety as soon as possible.
3. Would you cut the rope? Why or why not?
Ans: If it were up to me, I would have cut the rope. There are many reasons for this choice. Many may think that I am just trying to save my own skin and I do not contradict them. Yes, I would cut the rope to save myself. This is only partially true. I would then find help and attempt a rescue mission. I would not abandon my friend to die. In addition, It is better to have one person living than two people dying. Even if you did cut the rope just to save yourself, your friend would want you to continue living and live life to the fullest. I would have done everything in my power to try and save my friend. Lastly, my friend depends on me and I do not intend to disappoint him.
4. Look at the statements made by Joe below. What truth about life does each one hold? Feel free to use scenarios to help explain your answers.
Significant statements made by Joe which can be associated with Life (paraphrased)
"What I had to deal/face with was so big I could not deal with it"
Ans: This is similar to the metaphor "don't bite off more than you can chew". It is slightly different from the metaphor in a way that the person did not "bite" but was forced to deal with it. In life, we sometimes come across situations that are beyond our ability. Situations like these are sometimes inevitable. We have to maintain composed attitude and deal with it head on. You just have do your best and hope for the best.
"I had to keep making decisions whether they were right or wrong"
Ans: This is a tough one. There are many paths in life. Similarly, there are multiple choices that we have to make throughout our lives. There are events that require us to make choices and others that do not. In order for us to continue on with our lives, we have to keep on making decisions regardless of whether they are right or wrong. Take the scenario when Joe was hanging over the cliff for example. Simon had to make a decision, to cut or not to cut the rope. Each option was both wrong and right. If he did not make a decision, both of them would have died. This means that a person has to keep on making decisions even if the decision is wrong.
"I was so scared of going deeper but I had to do something"
Ans: When people are trapped in someplace in which they are unable to escape or break out from, they feel afraid. Suddenly, a new path is found! Everybody is shocked and afraid. No one dares to go deeper until sometime later. In situations like these, people have no choice but to venture deeper in hope of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Although people may be scared, they will be forced to do something. They are not forced by others but by themselves. Situations like these are also inevitable. When it comes down to doing something, there is only one thing to do, do it!
"I couldn't blindly hope things would get better"
Ans: In my opinion, I think it is a case of false hope. This phrase means that the person was putting hope into something that was not going to happen, unrealistic. That something was the situation that the person was in. He could not just randomly hope thing would get better. In life, if we were to put hope in someone or hope, we should know what we are hoping for.
5. Why is climbing a mountain used as a metaphor for life?
Ans: Climbing a mountain is often used as a metaphor for life. In life, there are multiple positives and negatives. Similar to life, a mountain has many crevasses, cliffs and whatnot. These represent the various negatives in life that we have to either endure or overcome. In addition, it also strengthens us and prepares us for what the unknown ahead. The positives, on the other hand, are the polar opposites of the negatives. They can also strengthen us. Some of them are even considered as a lucky break, similar to climbing a mountain. Life has many paths, just as mountains having different paths. Each level of the mountain represents each level in your life. The moment you reach the peak of the mountain is the moment you reach the pinnacle of your life. Live life meaningfully as you only have one.
6. Even the best laid educational or career plans can come to a disastrous end. What do you have to do to ensure your career plans, don't die on the mountain of life?
Ans: One thing thing that can be done is to have a contingency plan in case your plans fail. This may or may not affect your overall plan but it ensures that your plan has not reached its end yet. It is a backup that can be applied ASAP if your main plan suddenly crashes. Even better, the contingency plan can lead to an even greater result than your initial plan. In addition, your plan, contingency and original, are all created by you and you have all in your head. If your plan suddenly deviates from your original end, you still have all the blueprints in your head. Still, it is best that your plan does not come to a disastrous end no matter what.
